Catherine Fennell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Columbia University. Her research follows the transformation of the American welfare state and its effects on the politics of belonging, race and urban development in Chicago, and more broadly, the American Rust Belt. Her recent and forthcoming publications examine publicity, materiality and ethical compulsion in the context of Chicago’s public housing reforms. She is currently working on a book about these reforms entitled _Last Project Standing: Civics, Sympathy and the City Without Public Housing_.
